Schwager punctuates Mezz Pro Am victory
with finals shutout |
| As
if going undefeated wasn't enough, Derek
Schwager finished a September 11th stop
on the Mezz Pro-Am Tour by shutting
out his finals opponent, Michael Wong,
who'd moved into the west bracket at
the end of the first round. Wong had
just wrapped up his seventh straight
on the loss side, and had no idea that
he'd already won his last game of pool.
The $1,000-added event drew 28 entrants
to Mainline Billiards in Frazer, PA.
Meanwhile, Megan Smith, who's won three
Planet Pool Tour stops this year, is
one-and-one on the JPNEWT and finished
25th at the WPBA US Open in Tulsa this
June, is getting into the act with the
. . .gentlemen. She's cruising along
fine until she runs into Schwager among
the winners' side final four. Lou Petrikios
and Brad Shearer square off nearby.
Schwager gets into the hot seat match,
and allows Smith only a single rack
doing it. Patrikios gets by Shearer
7-5, but can only chalk up three racks
against Schwager, who then sits in the
hot seat, waiting for Wong.
Smith moves to the loss-side and runs
right into him; Wong, who's already
knocked down four, including Mike Donato
7-4, and one of the event 'headliners'-
Matt Krah 7-5. Shearer's on the loss-side,
facing Josh Brothers, another 'headliner,'
who shut Wong out in the opening round.
Wong then shuts out Smith, who leaves
in a tie for fifth place, having won
just a single game of her final 15.
Brothers downs Shearer 7-5 and the quarterfinal
rematch is on.
Wong exacts his revenge against Brothers
with a 7-5 victory, and ends his seven-game,
loss-side streak with a 7-3 win over
Patrikios in the semifinals. Wong joins
an elite club of pool players by beginning
and ending a tournament run on the wrong
end of a shutout and chalking up a shutout
of his own along the way. Schwager took
him down in the finals to claim the
event title.

Lombardo wins five on the loss-side,
two in finals, to take Mezz Pro Am stop
|
| When
he stepped into Sandcastle Billiards
on Sunday, August 28, Eddie Abraham
was looking to chalk up his third win
on the Mezz Pro Am Tour in 2011, and
his sixth since March 2010. While he
and the other 29 entrants, on-hand for
the $1,000-added event in Edison, NJ,
were mindful of area flood waters brought
on by Hurricane Irene, Abraham may have
overlooked another force of nature which
had made its way north from southern
waters; namely, Hunter Lombardo.
Lombardo had traveled north from his
normal 'hunting' grounds in and around
Florida to participate in the World
Straight Pool Championships, which had
been scheduled to commence on Sunday
in nearby East Brunswick, NJ. When the
start of that event was postponed, due
to the storm, Lombardo signed on to
do battle on the Mezz Pro Am Tour. While
Abraham survived their first meeting
– a double hill battle among the
winners' side final eight – he
was sent west himself in the battle
for the hot seat by Daniel Smith, who'd
most recently (July) shared 7th place
with Stevie Moore in the Richard Sweet
Memorial event in Atlanta. Lombardo
went on to win five straight on the
one-loss side, including the semifinal
rematch against Abraham, took both sets
of a true double elimination final versus
Smith and chalked up his first win on
this northeast tour.
Immediately after Abraham had dispatched
Lombardo to the loss-side, he got embroiled
in another double hill battle; this
one, versus Daniel Dagotdot. He survived
this one, too, and then faced Smith,
who'd just sent Joe Palone west 7-2.
It was Smith who moved into the hot
seat, with a 7-4 victory and then waited
for 'Hurricane' Lombardo to return.
Lombardo, in the meantime, was embarked
on a five straight, one-loss side streak
that featured an aggregate score of
35-12. He opened that campaign with
a 7-4 win over Gregg McAndrews, and
followed it with a 7-2 victory over
Raul Reyes, which set him up to face
Palone, coming over from the winners'
side final four. Dagotdot drew Brett
Stottlemyer, who'd defeated perennial
northeast powerhouse Dan Cintron 7-1
and Zack Christiansen 7-2.
Dagotdot and Stottlemyer got locked
up in a double hill battle that eventually
sent Dagotdot to the quarterfinals.
Lombardo, in the meantime, was picking
up speed and joined Dagotdot with a
7-1 victory over Palone. Lombardo then
downed Dagotdot 7-3 to earn his rematch
against Abraham.
Like the floodwaters that surrounded
the facility, Lombardo swept Abraham
aside in their re-match7-2, and moved
on to the true double elimination finals.
He took the opening set versus Smith
7-4, and then allowed him only a single
rack in the second set that earned him
the event title. |

Wong wins his first Mezz Pro-Am stop;
Dedicates win to Ginky |
| Michael
Wong has been kicking around the Northeast
pool scene for a few years now, and
though he's been among the top ten finishers
on a variety of tours, like the Tri-State,
Action Pool and Mezz Pro-Am, and finished
33rd in last year's US Open, he had,
until Sunday August 21, failed to chalk
up a major tour victory. That all changed
when he showed up at Raxx Bar &
Grill in West Hempstead, NY last weekend,
and went undefeated through a field
of 30 entrants, on-hand for the $1,000-added
Mezz Pro-Am stop.
As it turned out, Wong was able to record
the victory without benefit of a final
match. His opponent in the finals –
Oscar Bonilla, who had won seven on
the one-loss side to get back to those
finals – forfeited the match,
and split the first and second place
prize money. In recognition of the many
ways that he had been helped by the
man, Wong dedicated this first major
victory of his to George "Ginky"
Sansouci.
From among the winners' side final four,
with three wins behind him, Wong sent
Paul Revel west 7-3. He was joined in
the battle for the hot seat by Manny
Chau, who'd sent Bonilla west 7-3 in
the event's second round, and defeated
Holdin Chin 7-1 for the opportunity
against Wong. Wong chalked up an impressive,
hot seat shutout versus Chau, in what
proved to be his last match of the day.
Revel moved over to face Scott Simonetti,
who'd gotten by Ariel Rivera 7-1, and
Mark Pantovic 7-3. Chin ran into Bonilla,
who, with three wins already on the
one-loss side, had survived a double
hill battle versus Gregg McAndrews,
and then defeated Scott Murphy 7-3 for
the right to face Chin. Bonilla would
win his last four matches by the same
7-3 score.
Simonetti downed Revel 7-2, while Bonilla
eliminated Chin 7-3. In the quarterfinals
that followed, Bonilla ended Simonetti's
day with his third straight 7-3 win,
and then, in his semifinal re-match
versus Chau, defeated him 7-3, as well.
At this point, with the necessity of
defeating Wong twice in a true double
elimination final format, that could
easily have chased the dawn, Bonilla
conceded. An offer to split the first
and second place prize money was agreed
upon, with Wong as the winner of record.
Wong had his first major event victory.

George 'Ginky' Sansouci Memorial Pro
event |
Raj
Vannala went undefeated through a field
of 96 amateur entrants, on hand for
the first annual George 'Ginky' Sansouci
Memorial Tournament held on the weekend
of June 25-26. The $3,000-added amateur
event (run concurrently with a $2,000-added
Pro event) was a collaboration between
the Predator, Tri-State and Mezz Pro
Am Tours, and was hosted by Amsterdam
Billiards in Manhattan, NY.
From among the winners' side final four,
Vannala defeated the man who'd eventually
face him in the finals, Mike Panzarella
7-5. Vannala was joined in the hot seat
match by Jimmy Martinez, who'd sent
Nicholas Chan west 7-4. Vannala gained
the hot seat with a 7-5 victory over
Martinez.
Panzarella moved over to pick up Phil
Davis, who'd defeated Ned Bensurto 7-4
and Chris Giannokouros 8-6. Chan drew
Frank Ramos, who'd gotten by Jose Burgos
and Diana Rojas, both 7-5. Panzarella
downed Davis 7-4, as Ramos defeated
Chan 7-5. Panzarella then ended Ramos'
bid with an 8-6 victory in the quarterfinals,
and downed Martinez in the semifinals
8-5.
The finals were an extended race-to-11;
Panzarella needing to reach nine games
first to extend the race to 11. Vannala
made the point moot, reaching nine games,
ahead by three, to capture the first-ever
George 'Ginky' Sansouci Memorial Amateur
event.
He'd been down by two at 7-5 and 8-6,
but in the finals of the first annual
George 'Ginky' Sansouci Memorial Tournament
on Sunday, June 26, Mike Dechaine fought
back to win four in a row and keep a
one-loss side challenge by Dennis Hatch
at a two-game distance through to the
end. The $2,000-added Pro event, run
concurrently with a $3,000 amateur event,
won by Raj Vannala, drew 32 entrants
to Amsterdam Billiards in Manhattan,
NY, and marked the first collaborative
effort on the part of three northeast
tours – The Predator Tour, the
Tri-State tour and the Mezz Pro Am tour.
It was a grudge match there at the end,
because it was Dechaine who'd sent Hatch
packing to the west from among the winners'
side final eight. Dechaine moved on
to face Jeremy Sossei from among the
winners' side final four, as his eventual
hot seat opponent, Joey Testa, faced
Zion Zvi. Dechaine defeated Sossei 7-3,
while Testa was working on Zvi, sending
him west 7-5. Dechaine gained the hot
seat with a 7-2 win over Testa and waited
for a long time for Hatch.
Hatch moved over, downing first, Frankie
Hernandez 7-4 and then, Shawn Morgan
7-2 to pick up Zvi. Sossei drew Shaun
Wilkie, who'd gotten by Tony Robles
7-5 and Jorge Rodriguez in a double
hill battle. Hatch ended Zvi's day with
a 7-3 victory, as Wilkie survived a
second straight double hill battle with
a win over Sossei. In his third straight,
double hill matchup, Wilkie was dropped
into fourth place, and Hatch moved on
to meet Testa.
Hatch dispatched Testa rather handily
8-2 in the semifinals, and turned to
face Dechaine for a second time. It
was clear from the outset that neither
of these men were going to go down as
easily as either of their last two opponents.
They battled back and forth, one game
at a time to a 5-5 tie, before Hatch
took a slim, two game lead.
Dechaine pulled within one, and then,
after sinking five balls on his subsequent
break, he failed to make another. Hatch
moved out in front by two for a second
time. It was 8-6. A combination of top
notch shooting and some missed opportunities
by Hatch, put four games in a row in
Dechaine's pocket, and he was on the
hill. He rattled the 1-ball in a corner
pocket early in the next rack and Hatch
jumped on it, and every other ball left
on the table, to pull back within one.
Hatch sunk one ball on the subsequent
break, and missed his first shot at
the 1-ball. As though he had heard Hatch's
footsteps in that 19th rack run-out,
Dechaine stepped to the 20th rack, and
immediately bounced a long-table bank
shot at the same 1-ball, and then jumped
a ball to make a cross side bank. Some
safety play followed but with four balls
left, Dechaine squeezed the cue ball
past an intervening ball and banked
his target into a corner. With the voice
of Tony Robles, being picked up in the
UStream background, whispering "This
it is! This is it!" Dechaine continued
to work his way around the table. He
completed the rack and his undefeated
day, to become the first George 'Ginky'
Sansouci Memorial Tournament champion.

Klatt Crowned New NYC 9-Ball Champion
at Skyline Billiards |
| On
March 19-20, the sixth annual NYC 9-Ball
Championship was held at Skyline Billiard
Club in Brooklyn, NY. Skyline graciously
adds $3,000 each year to this event.
The format was a race to 9/7 with an
affordable entry fee of $150 to draw
players of all levels. Hot homemade
entrees were brought in on Saturday
for players, catered by co-owner Rob
Pole’s own mom.
“This tournament used to be held
the weekend before the world straight
pool tournament,” said tournament
director, Jose Burgos. This event has
always boasted an impressive attendance
record, most notably Francisco Bustamante’s
win in 2008 with Mika Immonen, Mike
Davis, and Johnny Archer among the field
and, Neils Feijen’s victory in
2007 when the Filipino contingency of
Dennis Orcollo, Ronnie Alcano, Lee Van
Corteza, and Jose Parica all made appearances.
This year was no different. A tough
field of 39 players showed up, including
reigning U.S. Open 9-Ball Champion Darren
Appleton, as well as Mike Davis, Jason
Klatt, and John Morra. Two-time reigning
champion, Stevie Moore’s hope
of bringing home a third title was shattered
when he got the one-two k.o. from Appleton.
Moore was defeated 9-7 in a first round
match deemed worthy of the finals. He
was later eliminated by Appleton 7-1
in 30 minutes flat and settled for 7th
place.
Appleton received his first loss by
Klatt when he missed a 3 ball at hill-hill.
A few rounds later, he found himself
down 5-2 against Morra who’s only
mistake was breaking dry. Appleton closed
the gap before hanging a 5 ball. Morra
pocketed the 5 and hooked himself on
the 6. His jumping skills failed him
this time, allowing Appleton control
of the game and match. Appleton dished
another convincing win of 7-1 over local
player Joey Kong before getting handed
a 7-1 loss from Rob Saez. Saez was ahead
6-0 before Appleton won his first game.
The Brit had several uncharacteristic
misses on the 9 ball and received a
third place finish for his efforts.
Klatt defeated Saez 9-6 to enter the
finals, while leading the entire match.
The confident Saez, who finished runner-up
to Ralf Souquet last weekend at the
Super Billiards Expo, was out for blood.
His strong victory over Appleton gave
him the chance for a rematch against
Klatt. Without hesitation, Saez claimed
the first set 9-7. Both players took
a quick break before starting the second
set. Klatt got his mistakes out of the
way early in the match when he missed
a 4 ball to go up 1-0. Before Saez knew
it, Klatt caught a gear and jumped ahead
6-1 before missing the same 4 ball in
the side. Saez took that game and the
next two but his comeback was short
lived. Klatt ran the final rack to win
7-3.
